THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FORGIVENESS AND TRUST

Biblical Account: Joseph and His Brothers — Genesis 42–45; 50:15–21

Forgiveness and trust are not the same thing. Forgiveness is a decision to release someone from the debt of their wrongdoing, while trust is built through demonstrated character and changed behaviour.

Joseph’s brothers betrayed him by selling him into slavery. Years later, when Joseph became a ruler in Egypt, he forgave his brothers and provided for them. Yet, when they first came to Egypt, he tested them before fully revealing himself (Genesis 42:15–20).

Joseph’s actions teach us an important lesson: forgiveness does not require us to abandon wisdom and discernment.

As Christians, we are called to forgive, just as God has forgiven us. However, forgiveness does not mean we must immediately restore the same level of access, confidence or responsibility to someone who has hurt us.

Jesus Himself did not entrust Himself to everyone, because He knew what was in people’s hearts (John 2:24–25).

The lesson is this: Forgive with love, but rebuild trust with wisdom. Do not allow bitterness to control your heart, but do not ignore patterns of behaviour that require caution.

We can forgive someone without placing ourselves in a position to be hurt by the same actions again.

Remember: Forgiveness frees your heart, but wisdom guides your steps.

“Be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” — Matthew 10:16 (KJV)

Prayer: Lord, give us hearts willing to forgive, eyes to discern wisely, and the grace to love others without compromising the wisdom You have given us. Amen.
