The Authority of Jesus by Marcel & Jacqueline Bruff

The Authority of Jesus.

(28/10/2025)

Jesus Christ possesses divine authority that transcends human understanding.

Jesus exercised His authority in various aspects of life, demonstrating His power and majesty. In this article, we'll explore seven things Jesus has authority over, backed by Scripture.

Sickness and Disease.

Jesus has authority to heal and cure sicknesses. In Matthew 9:6-8, Jesus demonstrates His power by healing a paralytic man, saying, "Get up, take up your bed, and go home." Mark 1:40-42 records Jesus' healing of a leper, showcasing His compassion and authority. Jesus' power over sickness and disease is a testament to His divine nature.

Demons and Evil Spirits.

Jesus has authority to cast out demons and evil spirits. In Matthew 8:28-34, Jesus encounters two demon-possessed men and casts out the demons, allowing the men to be restored. Mark 5:1-20 and Luke 4:33-37 provide further accounts of Jesus' authority over demons.

Nature.

Jesus has authority over nature, demonstrated by His power to calm storms and walk on water. In Matthew 8:23-27, Jesus calms a storm, and in Matthew 14:22-33, He walks on water, showcasing His divine power over creation.

Death.

“Marvel not at this, for the hour is coming, in which all that is in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth, they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life, and they that have done evil unto the resurrection of damnation.”

(John 5:28-29)

Jesus has authority over death, demonstrated by His power to raise the dead. In John 11:1-44, Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead, demonstrating His power over life and death. Matthew 9:18-26 and Mark 5:21-43 record additional instances of Jesus raising the dead.

Sin and Forgiveness.

Jesus has authority to forgive sins. In Matthew 9:1-8, Jesus heals a paralytic man and forgives his sins, prompting the Pharisees to question His authority. Jesus' response, "Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise and walk'?" (Matthew 9:5), highlights His divine authority.

Life and Salvation.

Jesus has authority to give eternal life and salvation. In John 10:27-30, Jesus says, "I give them eternal life, and they will never perish." John 11:25-26 and John 14:6 further emphasize Jesus' role as the source of eternal life.

All Creation.

Jesus has authority over all creation, as He is the creator and sustainer of all things. John 1:1-3 declares, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made." Colossians 1:15-17 and Hebrews 1:2-3 also affirm Jesus' authority over creation.

Witnesses to Jesus' Authority

Jesus Himself points to several witnesses who testify to His authority and identity. In John 5:31, Jesus says, "If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true; there is another who bears witness about me." He then points to the Father, the works He has done, and the Scriptures as witnesses to His authority.

The Fulfillment of Scripture.

In Luke 24:44-54, Jesus explains to His disciples how He fulfills the Scriptures, saying, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled." He then opens their minds to understand the Scriptures, emphasizing His authority and role as the Messiah.

In conclusion, Jesus' authority is a fundamental aspect of His divine nature. As the Son of God, He possesses power and authority over all aspects of life, including sickness, demons, nature, death, sin, and creation. As believers, we can trust in Jesus' authority and power, knowing that He is the ultimate source of hope, healing, and salvation.
