Consider the birds by Minister Carol Chambers

Psalm 84:1–4 expresses the deep longing of the believer to dwell in the presence of God. The psalmist begins by declaring, "How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord Almighty!" His soul longs and even faints for the courts of the Lord because he knows that true joy, peace, and satisfaction are found in God's presence. Our hearts were created to fellowship with God, and nothing in this world can replace the comfort and security that come from living close to Him.

The psalmist then draws our attention to the birds, saying that "Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young—a place near your altar." These small birds, often unnoticed by people, have found a safe resting place near God's altar. Their presence reminds us that God lovingly cares for even the smallest of His creatures. If He provides a home and protection for the birds, how much more will He care for those who belong to Him and seek His presence.

Jesus echoed this same truth in Matthew 6:26, saying, "Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?" The birds neither worry nor strive anxiously about tomorrow, yet God faithfully provides for them each day. As God's children, we are called to trust His faithful provision instead of allowing fear and anxiety to rule our hearts. The God who watches over the birds is watching over us.

Psalm 84 also teaches that the greatest blessing is not merely receiving God's gifts but living in His presence. Verse 4 says, "Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you." Those who remain close to the Lord discover lasting joy, strength, and peace that the world cannot give. Like the birds that made their nests near God's altar, we should continually seek to make God's presence our dwelling place through prayer, worship, and obedience. There we find safety, purpose, and unending grace.

The message of these verses is clear: consider the birds and learn from them. They remind us of God's loving care, faithful provision, and perfect protection. If the Lord watches over the sparrow and provides a nest for the swallow, we can confidently place our lives in His hands. Let us seek His presence above all else, trusting that He knows every need before we ask and that those who dwell with Him are truly blessed.
