“Fruit Bearers or Imposters?"
As we journey through life as followers of Christ, it's essential to examine our lives and ask ourselves, “Are we genuinely bearing fruit, or are we masquerading as disciples?” Jesus' words in John 15:8 provide a clear benchmark for evaluating our authenticity.
"Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples."
The Fruit of the Spirit
The fruit we're called to bear is not limited to external actions or accomplishments. Rather, it's the internal transformation that occurs when we surrender to the Holy Spirit's work in our lives. Galatians 5:22-23 describes this fruit:
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance...".
These traits are not mere suggestions or recommendations; they are the identifiable characteristics of a genuine disciple.
So, how can we distinguish between imposters and authentic disciples?
Here are a few questions to consider:
- Do we exhibit love, joy, and peace in the midst of challenging circumstances?
- Are we patient and gentle when dealing with difficult people or situations?
- Do we demonstrate goodness, faith, and meekness in our interactions with others?
- Are we temperate and self-controlled, or do we give in to impulsive desires?
If we're honest with ourselves, we may find that we're falling short in one or more of these areas. However, this realization can serve as a catalyst for growth and transformation.
Reflections & Questions!
As we reflect on our lives and the fruit we're bearing, consider these questions:
- What areas of my life need transformation and growth?
- How can I cultivate the fruit of the Spirit in my daily interactions?
- Am I willing to surrender to the Holy Spirit's work in my life, even if it means confronting uncomfortable truths about myself?
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
We come before You, acknowledging our shortcomings and weaknesses. Help us to surrender to the Holy Spirit's work in our lives, that we may bear the fruit of love, joy, peace, and all the other characteristics of a genuine disciple.
Transform us, Lord, that we may be identifiable as Your followers. May our lives bring glory to Your name, and may we be authentic disciples, bearing much fruit for Your kingdom.
In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
