Waiting
The concept of waiting has always been puzzling for me. While growing up in Jamaica, I lived around the thought that “waiting is a heavy load”. From a secular and a natural stand point, it really is. When waiting in the natural, it’s like time slows down. I don’t mind waiting, I don’t mind waiting, I don’t mind waiting on you Lord, the song writer writes, but do we really wait on Him?
Waiting in the English Language means, to stay where one is or to delay action until a particular time or until something else happens. Biblically, waiting encompasses an action of patience, trust and hope in God’s timing and promises. It portrays a believer’s spiritual discipline and it reflects his faith and reliance on God’s providence, sovereignty and wisdom.
Wait in Hebrew is conveyed as a sense of hope and expectation as seen in Isaiah 40:31. “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew ….” In the Greek, the word wait is often used to describe our eager expectation as states in Romans 8:25. “But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.” David said in Psalm 27:14, “wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart; wait, I say, on the Lord.”
Waiting is not passive; it is an active expression of faith. It acts as a test for believers to stay steadfast and hopeful. Even in the face of uncertainty or delay. While we wait, we pray and exhibit a posture of readiness with humility. Wait I say on the Lord.
God Bless.
