The Whole Duty of Man by Minister Mark Lior

The Whole duty of Man: A brief summary of the Book of Ecclesiastes

The Ecclesiastes writer penned a prolific comprehensive outline of life under the Sun.

Regarding himself as the preacher, Solomon shared his observations and wisdom with deep trepidation expressing "vanity, vanity, all is vanity and vexation of spirit."

In chapter 1 - Solomon instructs us that there is nothing new under the Sun.

In chapter 2 - We observe that great positions doesn't give lasting satisfaction for the soul.

In chapter 3 - To everything there is a time and season.

In Chapter 4 - This outlines that two is better than one and it's not wise to be alone and a three-fold cord is not easily broken.

In chapter 5 - It warns that when thou vowest, pay thy vows. Better not to vow in the beginning. Choose your words wisely do not passionately swear to things you cannot commit to especially to God.

In chapter 6 - All the labour of Man is for his mouth, but he is never truly or fully satisfied

In Chapter 7 - We see Solomon's quest for wisdom he declares "Wisdom strengthens the wise more than 10 mighty men in a city."

In chapter 8 - We learn that there is a reward for the Fear of the Lord.

In chapter 9 - We are reminded that the race is not for the Swift, nor the battle for the strong, but all is due to time and chance, and those that endure to the end.

In chapter 10 - This describes a case of comparison and contrast of the fool and the wise and their conduct and approach to life.

In chapter 11 - We are instructed to cast our bread upon the waters and thou shall find it in many days. Give yourself options to diversify in who you help and where you invest your time and resources.

Chapter 12 - Opens up with a reminder.

Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth.

This is the same creator God when we take into account Genesis 1; who said "Let There Be Light and there was light"

Who in a conversation with Job in Job Chapter 38: God asked "Where was he when he placed the Foundations between the Land and the Sea" or "Does he know the breath of the Earth" or "Where does light dwell?" or "Who is the father of the rain?"

There is nothing impossible for God when we bring to our Remembrance how awesome our creator is.

In verse 12 of chapter 12, Solomon brings a conclusion to the whole matter.

He instructs us to fear God and keep his commandments... for this is the whole duty of man and it will be all we will be judged by.

The Word of God Declares:

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Psalm 34: 9

There is no want to them that fear the Lord. Proverbs 19: 23

The fear of the Lord prolongs our days. Proverbs 9: 10

The fear of the Lord is a foundation of Life. Proverbs 14: 26

Prayer: My prayer today is that we learn the reverential fear of the Lord and walk in the obedience of keeping his commandments. Father we submit and surrender ourselves to your awesome sovereignty. Teach us the fear of the Lord that we may fulfill the whole Duty and purpose of life.
