The Duty of Man
The Bible states in Ecclesiastes 12:13, “let us hear the whole conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep His commandments for this is the whole duty of man.”
Solomon, the writer of the book of Ecclesiastes, is considered as the smartest and richest man in the Bible. After taking over the throne of his father David, Solomon was asked by God in 2 Chronicles 1:7, “…. ask what I shall give thee.” Responding to Solomon’s request God said to him because thou “…. hast asked wisdom and knowledge for thyself, …. Wisdom and knowledge is granted unto thee, and I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honour ….,” vs. 11-12.
With this fact of Solomon’s wisdom and knowledge, consider the whole duty of man.
1) Fear God – to reverence God, to be in total awe of God’s awesomeness. It speaks to our total submission to God. It’s acknowledging God’s sovereignty, His supreme authority and holiness. Proverbs 9:10, “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”
2) Keep His Commandments – Matthew 22:37-39, “thou shalt love the Lord thy God, with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. …. Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself ….” We need to delight ourselves in the commandments of God.
If God is not number one in your life, today make Him such, this is the whole duty of man.
God Bless
