Prayer and Fasting by Minister Carol Chambers

Prayer and fasting are not just religious duties or routines that we perform out of obligation, but they are sacred pathways that draw us into deeper intimacy and communion with God, allowing our hearts to become aligned with His divine will and eternal purpose for our lives. We pray because we desire to remain connected to the heart of God, to hear His voice clearly, and to walk closely with Him daily, while fasting helps silence the distractions of the flesh and the noise of the world so that our spiritual ears can become sensitive to what the Holy Spirit is saying.

Many times life becomes so busy, repetitive, and spiritually draining that we begin to lose discernment and no longer recognize the direction God is trying to lead us in, but through prayer and fasting our spirit's are awakened again in His presence. “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” (Jeremiah 33:3).

Before we were ever formed in our mother’s womb, God already knew us intimately, and He established a divine purpose and destiny for our lives long before we entered this world. Every person was created with heavenly intention, and God desires for us to walk in the plans He carefully prepared for us from the beginning. Through prayer and fasting, we position ourselves to discover what God has ordained, predestined, and spoken over our lives, rather than following our own limited understanding or worldly desires. “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee.” (Jeremiah 1:5).

Fasting strengthens our spiritual sensitivity because it teaches us to deny the flesh while feeding the spirit, creating room for God’s wisdom, direction, and revelation to flow more clearly into our hearts. There are seasons when spiritual distractions, emotional burdens, and the cares of life cloud our hearing, making it difficult to discern the voice of God, but fasting removes many of those barriers and helps us refocus completely on Him. As we humble ourselves before the Lord, He begins to reveal hidden things, restore clarity, and renew our spiritual strength. “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”( Matthew 4:4).

Prayer is where we build relationship with God, not merely asking Him for things, but learning His character, understanding His heart, and allowing Him to transform us from within. The more time we spend in His presence, the more our desires begin to reflect His desires, and our thoughts begin to align with His thoughts. God longs for His children to seek Him wholeheartedly, because it is in His presence that we find peace, direction, healing, wisdom, and true identity. “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.” ( Jeremiah 29:13).

When we combine prayer with fasting, powerful spiritual breakthroughs can take place because we are intentionally surrendering ourselves before God and making Him our highest priority above every earthly distraction. Through consistent prayer and fasting, strongholds can be broken, faith can be strengthened, and hearts can become fully yielded to the leading of the Holy Spirit. It is through these moments of consecration that God often reveals His plans, renews vision, restores purpose, and draws us into greater spiritual maturity. “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.”( James 4:8).

Ultimately, prayer and fasting are about pursuing the presence of God above everything else, because only in His presence can we truly understand who we are and what He has called us to become. God does not want us to walk blindly through life without direction, but He desires to lead us step by step according to His divine will and purpose. As we spend time before Him in prayer and fasting, our hearts become open, our spirits become sensitive, and we begin to walk confidently in the destiny He prepared for us before the foundations of the earth. “For I know the plans I have for you, saith the Lord, plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11).
