Martha! Martha!
"You are worried and upset about many things.”
In the midst of our busy lives, it's easy to get caught up in the minor and temporary things of this world. We worry about our daily concerns, our careers, our finances, and our relationships. While these things are important, they are not the ultimate priorities. As Christians, we are called to focus on what truly matters.
In Luke 10:41, Jesus says to Martha, "You are worried and upset about many things." Martha was distracted by the mundane tasks of hospitality, while her sister Mary was focused on listening to Jesus' teaching. Jesus gently rebukes Martha, reminding her that there is only one thing that is truly necessary.
So, what are the things that truly matter? Here are a few:
- Our relationship with God (Matthew 22:37-40)
- Our relationships with others (Matthew 22:39, Galatians 5:14)
- Our character and integrity (Proverbs 10:9, 1 Timothy 4:12)
- Our eternal destiny (Matthew 25:31-46, 1 Corinthians 3:10-15)
These are the things that are truly priceless. They are the investments that will last for eternity.
As the Bible says, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal." (Matthew 6:19-20)
This life is like the dew on the grass - it vanishes away as the sunlight comes out in the morning (Hosea 13:3). Let us not get caught up in the fleeting things of this world, but instead, let us focus on what truly matters.
As the apostle Paul says, "For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all." (2 Corinthians 4:17)
Reflection and Prayer:
As we reflect on our priorities, let us ask ourselves:
- What are we investing our time, energy, and resources in?
- Are we focusing on the things that truly matter?
Let us pray:
Dear Heavenly Father,
Help us to keep our eyes fixed on what is truly important. May we invest our lives in the things that will last for eternity. Give us wisdom to prioritize our relationships with You and others, and to focus on our character and integrity.
In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
"For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain." - Philippians 1:21
