God uses us with Imperfections (Because of his Great Grace and Mercy)
Key Scripture: 2 Corinthians 12:9
“My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9 (KJV)
### Introduction
Beloved, one of the greatest truths we must understand in our walk with God is that God does not require us to be perfect before He can use us. He requires us to be willing to surrender to Him.
Sometimes we look at our weaknesses, our past mistakes, our shortcomings and our imperfections, and we begin to question whether God can truly use us. We may feel unworthy, inadequate or disqualified because we know the areas of our lives where we still need His transforming power.
But thank God for His grace and mercy!
God knows everything about us. He knows our strengths and our weaknesses, our victories and our failures, yet He still calls us, loves us and chooses to work through us.
God does not use us because we are perfect; He uses us because He is gracious, merciful and faithful.
### 1\. God Chooses Imperfect People to Fulfil His Perfect Purposes
Throughout the Bible, we see God using people who had weaknesses, made mistakes and faced personal struggles.
* Moses felt inadequate and struggled with his speech, yet God chose him to lead Israel out of Egypt (Exodus 4:10–12).
* David committed serious sins, yet when he repented, God showed him mercy and continued His work in his life (Psalm 51).
* Peter denied Jesus three times, yet Jesus restored him and entrusted him with the responsibility of strengthening others (John 21:15–17).
* Paul had persecuted the church, yet God's grace transformed him into a mighty apostle who preached the Gospel (1 Timothy 1:12–16).
What does this teach us?
Our imperfections do not surprise God. He is not discovering our weaknesses as He works with us. He knows us completely, and He is able to work in us and through us despite our limitations.
Your weakness does not have to be the end of your usefulness to God. In His hands, your life can become a testimony of His grace.
### 2\. God's Grace Is Greater Than Our Weaknesses
In 2 Corinthians 12:9, the Lord tells Paul:
“My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.”
Paul had a weakness that he asked God to remove, but God showed him that His grace was sufficient.
Sometimes we spend so much time asking God to remove every weakness before we serve Him that we fail to recognise what He wants to accomplish through us right now.
We may say:
* “Lord, I am not qualified enough.”
* “Lord, I have made too many mistakes.”
* “Lord, I do not know enough of Your Word.”
* “Lord, I am not as spiritually mature as others.”
* “Lord, who am I to pray for someone else when I still have struggles of my own?”
But God reminds us that His power is not limited by our human inadequacies.
This does not mean that God approves of our sins or that we should remain comfortable in our weaknesses. Rather, His grace forgives us, strengthens us and empowers us to grow in holiness and obedience.
We must be willing to let Him work on us while He works through us.
### 3\. God's Mercy Gives Us Another Opportunity
Lamentations 3:22–23 declares:
“It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”
What a wonderful assurance!
God's mercy means that our failures do not have to define our future. When we sincerely repent, He forgives us and gives us the opportunity to rise again.
Peter denied the Lord, but his story did not end with denial. Jesus restored him.
This is the power of mercy!
Perhaps you have failed in an area where you once believed you were strong. Perhaps you have spoken when you should have remained silent, reacted when you should have shown patience, or struggled to demonstrate the love of Christ.
Do not allow condemnation to keep you away from God. Come to Him in repentance, receive His forgiveness and allow Him to restore you.
First John 1:9 assures us that when we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Mercy gives us another opportunity, but grace also empowers us to walk differently.
We are not called to use God's mercy as an excuse to remain the same. We are called to let His mercy transform us.
### 4\. We Are Vessels of Clay Carrying God's Treasure
Second Corinthians 4:7 says:
“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.”
God deliberately uses the picture of ordinary clay vessels to teach us something powerful.
We are fragile. We have limitations. We can become weary, discouraged and uncertain. Yet God has entrusted us with the precious treasure of the Gospel.
Why?
So that the world will see that the power belongs to Him, not to us.
When God uses an imperfect person to bring encouragement, healing, wisdom, prayer or restoration into another person's life, the glory belongs to God.
We do not have to pretend to be perfect. We must simply remain humble, teachable and surrendered to the Holy Spirit.
Our testimony is not that we have never struggled. Our testimony is that God's grace has sustained us, His mercy has restored us, and His power continues to work in us.
### 5\. Be Willing to Be Used While God Is Still Working on You
Philippians 1:6 reminds us:
“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”
God is still working on us!
We are all growing in faith, developing our character and learning to become more like Jesus. Spiritual maturity is a journey.
Do not wait until you believe you have everything together before you pray for someone, encourage a struggling soul, share the Gospel or serve in the house of God.
Be willing to say:
“Lord, I am not perfect, but I am available. Teach me, correct me, strengthen me and use me for Your glory.”
At the same time, we must remain accountable, accept correction and allow godly counsel to help us grow. Being used by God does not place us above correction; it makes humility even more important.
God is looking for surrendered hearts that are willing to obey Him.
### Conclusion: His Grace Is Sufficient!
Beloved, let us stop disqualifying ourselves from the work God has called us to do simply because we are conscious of our imperfections.
Remember:
* Moses had inadequacies, but God used him.
* David had failures, but God showed him mercy.
* Peter denied Jesus, but Jesus restored him.
* Paul had a painful past, but grace gave him a new purpose.
And what about us?
We, too, are recipients of God's amazing grace and abundant mercy.
We are not perfect vessels, but we serve a perfect God. We do not have unlimited strength, but we serve an all-powerful God. We do not have a spotless past, but through repentance and faith in Christ, we can receive forgiveness and walk in the newness of life.
Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, knowing that we can receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need (Hebrews 4:16).
Do not allow your imperfections to become an excuse for disobedience. Instead, surrender them to God and allow Him to shape you into the vessel He desires you to be.
Remember this powerful truth:
God's grace is greater than your weakness. His mercy is greater than your past. His power is greater than your limitations. And His purpose for your life is not dependent on your perfection, but on His faithfulness as you trust and obey Him.
Amen!
### A Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, in the mighty name of Jesus, thank You for Your great grace and abundant mercy.
Thank You that You know our imperfections and weaknesses, yet You continue to love us and call us into Your purposes.
Lord, forgive us for the times we have allowed feelings of inadequacy, guilt, fear and condemnation to stop us from obeying Your voice.
Create in us clean hearts, renew the right spirit within us, and teach us to depend not on our own strength but on Your mighty power.
Help us to remain humble, teachable and willing to be corrected. Transform our character, strengthen our faith and make us vessels of honour for Your glory.
Father, use our lives to encourage the broken, strengthen the weak, pray for those in need and demonstrate the love of Jesus to a world that desperately needs You.
May our lives never bring glory to ourselves, but always point others towards Your goodness, grace and mercy.
Thank You, Lord, that You are still working on us, still shaping us and still able to use us for Your glory.
In Jesus' mighty name, Amen. 🙏
