Church members versus Disciples: What’s the difference by Jacqueline & Marcel Bruff

Church Members vs Disciples: What's the Difference?

In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus commands us to "go and make disciples of all nations." But what's the difference between being a church member and being a disciple?

A church member is someone who attends a church, maybe even participates in activities. A disciple, on the other hand, is a follower of Christ who actively lives out His teachings.

3 Types of Church Members

1. The Casual Attender. They show up occasionally but aren't deeply invested.

- "Many are invited, but few are chosen" (Matthew 22:14).

2. The Active Volunteer. They serve in the church but may lack personal devotion.

- "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 7:21).

3. The Spiritual Supporter They give financially and pray, but may not be growing spiritually.

- "If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?" (1 John 3:17).

3 Things a Disciple of Christ is:

1. A Follower They prioritize God's Word and obey it.

- "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples" (John 8:31).

2. A Learner They seek to grow in their faith and understanding.

- "Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" (2 Peter 3:18).

3. A Witness They share their faith and love with others.

- "You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8).

Dear Heavenly Father, help us to be disciples who love and follow You wholeheartedly. Give us the courage to live out our faith and share it with others. Amen
