When I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, I was bouncy for Him, having a spiritual pep in my step. I remember when someone in the Church I attended said about me, “give him time, he will soon lose that zeal.”
Apathy is defined as the absence or suppression of passion, emotion, or excitement and the absence of concern for things of importance. Spiritual apathy speaks to the lack of interest, enthusiasm, or concern for spiritual matters. The Bible consistently speaks about spiritual complacency.
“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in the law doth he meditate day and night,” Psalm 1:1-2. Believers are called to fervency and being fully active by faith. Spiritual apathy erodes our spiritual passion and our impact in the Church. It speaks to lack of growth; we become spiritually stagnant.
When our enthusiasm for the gospel is diminished, we have become spiritually apathetic. This is caused by sin, the pursuit of worldly pleasures, past hurts, lack of prayer and the reading of the Bible. Are you distracted, depressed and filled with unresolved disappointments? Are you bored or stressed? These cause spiritually apathy. “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you ….,” James 4:7-8. Bring it all to Jesus today.
God Bless.
