Kicking against the pricks

This metaphor seen In Acts 9:5 was made known in Saul’s encounter with the true and living God. Unfortunately for Saul, his experience on the road of Damascus brought tangible truth to this statement. “And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom though persecutest; it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.” Are we kicking against the pricks today?

Pricks, known as “goads” is referred to as Kentron in the Greek, which describes a pointed stick. Farmers in Biblical times would use these sharp sticks to keep the oxen moving forward. Whenever the ox would resist and kick back, they ended up harming themselves by coming in contact with these sharp sticks. The ox was used in the plowing of the fields but sometimes they were stubborn and rebellious and they ended up injuring themselves.

Before Saul’s conversion, he thought he was doing the right thing by persecuting the believers of Jesus Christ. He actively tried to destroy the Church by dragging Christian men and women to prison. He was an educated Pharisee who studied under the renowned Jewish teacher, Gamaliel. How many of us are educated in the word but has not yet come in contact with the Man Christ Jesus?

Take a good look around you, many Churches are dying because of religion. They are preaching and teaching the gospel without a true encounter with Jesus. Jesus said to Saul, “it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.” Before Paul’s conversion he was Saul, but after coming in contact with Jesus his whole life changed, even his name changed from Saul to Paul. Have you been changed since coming into contact with Jesus?
